About Us

Who we are

Founded in 1986, Bald Eagle Grotto is a community of cavers united by a shared passion for exploration, learning, and the conservation of caves and karst landscapes. As a grotto affiliated with the National Speleological Society, we promote safe and responsible caving, support the study of speleology, and advocate for the protection of the underground world for future generations. In 2026, Bald Eagle Grotto became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, further strengthening our educational and conservation mission. Since 2019, we have operated as a fully virtual grotto, connecting members across Central Pennsylvania and beyond while continuing to foster stewardship, camaraderie, and respect for the hidden places beneath our feet.

What we do

We are a bunch of weirdos who love to go into the dark and get muddy. We map caves, we rappel down giant pits and we promote safe caving techniques while helping to protect the fragile ecosystems we explore.

Activities range from:

  • Exploring Caves/Karst

  • Surveying/Mapping

  • Research Support

  • Conservation

  • Vertical/Single Rope Work

  • Cave Diving

  • OutReach Programs

Where we meet

Bald Eagle Grotto meets online via Zoom on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Our virtual meetings are open to the public, and anyone with an interest in caves, caving, or conservation is encouraged to join us. Meetings provide a chance to connect, share knowledge, discuss upcoming trips and projects, and enjoy the camaraderie of the caving community. In addition to our regular meetings, we occasionally host informal social meet‑ups, both virtual and in person. To stay up to date on meetings, events, and announcements, please like and follow us on Facebook.
